What are the conventions in the film "10 Things I Hate About You" and how does it appeal to the audience?

Posted on June 22nd, 2010 by admin in conventions | 4 Comments »

What are the conventions in terms of the "Coming of Age" romantic comedy films? What messages does it give to the viewer?

The girl always gets the guy, and vice versa.

You don’t have to be in the ‘cool’ gang to get your heart’s desire. i.e. be true to yourself.

The ‘hot’ guy usually turns out to be a jerk.

If you drink at an underage party you will make a fool of yourself/ vomit!

I guess it appeals because it makes young people believe they can be who they want to be and still get what they want out of life – it’s a really hopeful message. Plus Heath Ledger is so cute in this movie!

Michigan Swan: Anime Convention 2009

Posted on June 21st, 2010 by admin in conventions | 25 Comments »

Hey gang, welcome to another special Michigan Swan episode. In this one, I went with my friend Rupert to JAFAX, which is now on its 14th year. It’s a convention held at Grand Valley State University that focues on anime, manga and games. It’s also totally free to get into, which sets it apart from other conventions. So, while it may not be the largest con (for some of those, see my tokyo swan series), it doesn’t cost a dime to walk into the door which is cool.

We went two years ago, and just like last time we decided to cosplay and dress in costumes to get into the spirit of things. Last time, I picked a (at the time in america) character that was fairly obscure to American anime fans (kyon from the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya), but this time Rupert and I got a great reception for our Pokemon ‘team rocket grunt’ costumes. They were also extremely cheap to make, so I was very pleased with the results.

The convention itself was fun (especially if you are into cosplay). There were different booths selling anime goods, and there were different rooms showing subbed and dubbed anime, childrens anime, adult anime (hillarious), as well as music videos and other fun things. Anyways, hope you enjoy this episode of Michigan Swan… and see you next time!

What is the best way to cosplay if you can’t go to conventions?

Posted on June 16th, 2010 by admin in conventions | 3 Comments »

Other than Halloween?
I cosplayed twice, Misa Amane to the DN movie at the theater and Aerith Gainsborough for Halloween. But how do I cosplay if I absolutley can’t go to a con?

Also do you think it is a waste of money to try to make a perfect costume[like buy exact fabric, simalar wig, shoes, etc.] if you don’t go to conventions?

Honestly you can cosplay anywhere, go to like a walmart and just goof off with friends in costumes, or try and start something for the anime luvers in your area, talk with your local library, sometimes they have anime groups. Personally I think cosplay is a Fun group thing anywhere.

What are those little fluffy things you get at conventions called?

Posted on June 9th, 2010 by admin in conventions | 3 Comments »

There are these little fluffy things usually animals like sheep, with big stickable feet and long lables promoting stuff. Always to be found at conventions & fairs, and inside promo goody bags. Does anyone know what they are called, or where I might find them…? I am searching through promo sites without much luck :(

I call them furries but I don’t know the real name.

At a national convention, who votes for the nomination of the party’s candidate?

How does a person win the presidential nomination?

In which months do the national conventions take place?

1. Delegates.
2. Have the most of 1. above.
3. If you are referring to the conventions that nominate the presidential candidates for the Democrats and Republicans it would be in August or early September of years divisible by 4.
